ARCHIVES 02.15.10 Recruitment of Superintendent The Ascension Parish School Board is currently recruiting a new superintendent of schools to serve the district as long-time Ascension Parish educational leader, Donald Songy, has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2010. The Ascension Parish School System is currently ranked No. 4 in the state among public school districts, according to the Louisiana Department of Education. The ranking is based upon a compilation of school performance data, including results of student test scores on accountability exams. The Ascension Parish School System also is one of the state’s fastest-growing public school districts. The district recently constructed five new elementary schools to help manage the growing enrollment and a sixth is under construction. Over the next several years school officials have plans to improve, restore and refurbish a multitude of school buildings across the entire district. School Board President Ed Price said applications for the position of superintendent of schools will be accepted until noon on Monday, February 22. An advertisement requesting applications from qualified persons has been published in the following journals and entities: Gonzales Weekly Citizen, The Advocate, Times Picayune, The Donaldsonville Chief, the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents, the Louisiana School Board Association, and on the Ascension Parish School Board’s website, www.apsb.org. As part of the district’s selection process, community representatives will participate in the selection process. Those community participants include Dr. Bill Martin, vice-chancellor of River Parishes Community College (RPCC); Gussie Hahn, CF Industries; Robert Burgess, president & chief operating officer of EATEL; Becky Katz, Donaldsonville Chamber of Commerce; Sherrie Despino, Ascension Chamber of Commerce; Jessie Bartley, retired school system employee; Ralph Ricardo, retired school system employee; and Randall Aldridge, a former school board member. Community interviews will be conducted at a public forum on Monday, March 22 at the B.C. Alwes Auditorium in Donaldsonville. The school board anticipates appointing a new superintendent at the April 6 school board meeting, which will be held at the school system’s central office in Donaldsonville.
