$100 Million Capital Improvement Plan Will Upgrade Facilities, But NOT Increase Taxes

Ascension School Board Seeks Voter Approval of Facility Improvement Plan with School Proposition on Oct. 17 Election Ballot

“It is important that we correct the huge disparity that exists among so many of our schools. We cannot be a system of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots,’ but a cohesive district equipped to successfully manage our growing enrollments and the growing expectations of our students. We must provide facilities that support learning environments to make Every Child Successful.”
 - Ascension School Superintendent Donald Songy

The Ascension School Board is asking voters to extend a 15.08 millage rate that is currently on the rolls. The millage was approved in October 2005 as part of the district’s large construction effort to build five new elementary schools. At that time, voters agreed to levy the millage for 20 years – to the year 2025 – to pay for the construction plan. By extending this millage through the year 2029, the school district can gain $100 million to make major facility improvements throughout the parish with NO increase in taxes.

Some of the major projects in the parish-wide plan are:

  • Construction of a new G.W. Carver Primary. The current facility is 53 years old, and costs to repair and upgrade the campus would exceed the cost to build a new school at a new location.
  • Major renovations of Prairieville Middle and Gonzales Primary. Nearly every building at 50-year-old Prairieville Middle will be replaced at the current site and the campus will be reoriented to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety. The older buildings in the back of the Gonzales Primary campus will be replaced and the main building, which was constructed under the WPA program in 1936, will be renovated and updated for greater efficiency.
  • Expansion of existing campuses to create the “hard capacity” for large student enrollments, eliminating the need and cost of maintaining a large number of temporary buildings. The district’s “hard capacity” projections are realistic considering the parish’s growth rate – 720 for primary schools, 800 to 900 for middle schools, and 1,700 for high schools.
  • Update of the electrical infrastructure to give all parish schools the needed capacity for classroom technology. Many current school buildings are not “hard wired” to support the latest technology programs and electronic hardware now used daily in the classrooms.
  • Upgrade of the District’s data network to create greater opportunities and access to wireless technology on the campuses, thereby making possible a district-wide initiative to have a computer for every single student.
  • Security cameras for all campuses to improve safety.
