17 Schools to Serve Free Meals for 2017-18

Part of the Federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Program

Donaldsonville, La. – Seventeen of the 28 Ascension Public Schools will offer free student meals for the 2017-18 school year as part of the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. CEP is a meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas. A key provision of The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act (HHFKA, Public Law 111-296; December 13, 2010), CEP allows the nation’s highest poverty schools and districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students without the burden of collecting household applications.

To be eligible for the CEP program, a school must meet percentage thresholds for homeless, migrant, and foster students as well as participation in the food stamp program and school meal program.

"We are grateful that these federal funding programs are available to schools, and we are able to offer this to those that best qualify. This welcome announcement is attributed to the work of our Child Nutrition Supervisor Leuna Johnson and her staff that analyzed our district's opportunities to support students and families through cost-effective and nutritious meals," said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent David Alexander.

All students in the Ascension school district who qualify will to continue to receive meal assistance through the free and reduced meal program. CEP eliminates the need for parents to apply for aid and extends free meals to all students at the following 17 eligible schools:
  1. Central Primary
  2. Donaldsonville High
  3. Donaldsonville Primary
  4. Duplessis Primary
  5. East Ascension High
  6. Gonzales Middle
