Ascension Appoints New School Leaders

Gonzales, La. – Ascension Public Schools announces the hiring of three new school leaders: G.W. Carver Primary Principal Rhonda Gillard, Central Primary Assistant Principal Michelle Parr and Galvez Middle Assistant Principal Tachelle White.

Head and shoulders of Rhonda Gillard in front of APSB bannerRhonda Gillard is the new principal of G.W. Carver Primary. She replaces Latatia Johnson, who recently became an instructional supervisor of elementary education.

Gillard has been in education for over 17 years. After teaching six years in New Orleans and one year in Georgia, she and her family relocated to Ascension Parish in 2006. In 2007, she joined Ascension Public Schools as a teacher at Dutchtown Primary. She later became an instructional coach at Prairieville Primary and was appointed assistant principal of Sorrento Primary in 2011.

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in social work from Southern University at New Orleans. After completing the teaching certification program at Xavier University, she returned to school to earn a master's degree in educational leadership from Southeastern Louisiana University.

"Thank you to all of the district leaders and colleagues that have been a part of my journey. I truly feel poised and ready for this next chapter and am honored to be able to serve the students and staff of G.W. Carver Primary," said Gillard "I embrace this opportunity to work with dedicated students and their parents. My goal is to continue the academic success that Carver has achieved, thus far. I cannot wait to kick off this school year!"

Head and shoulders of Michelle Parr in front of APSB bannerMichelle Parr is the new assistant principal of Central Primary. She replaces Cynthia Jackson, who recently became the assistant principal of the Early College Option program.

Parr is a product of Ascension Parish and has worked for the district for the past 18 years. She began teaching in 1999 at Dutchtown Primary and taught third and fourth grades there for 10 years. In 2009, she taught fourth grade at Spanish Lake Primary, became a teach coach at St. Amant Primary in 2011 and served as a mentor teacher at Gonzales Primary in 2013. For the last three years, Parr has worked at Central Primary as a master teacher.

She earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in educational leadership from Louisiana State University.

"It has been an honor working in our parish for the last 18 years," said Parr. "I am extremely excited to continue my journey working with Mrs. Knight, Central Primary's staff, our students and their parents."

Head and shoulders of Tachelle White in front of APSB bannerTachelle White is the new assistant principal of Galvez Middle. She replaces Mary Daze, who recently became the district's executive master teacher.

White was born and raised in Baton Rouge and has worked in Ascension Parish for the last six years. Her teaching career began at Lowery Middle and for the last five years she has worked at Central Middle School. She has taught seventh grade math, eighth grade math, Algebra I and served as a teacher coach for the past two years.

She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from LSU, a master's degree in public administration from Southern University and earned a plus 30 certificate. She is currently working on a doctoral degree in educational leadership at Southeastern Louisiana University.

"Thank you for this great opportunity. I am very excited to work with Michelle and the incredible staff at Galvez Middle School," said White. "I am looking forward to becoming a Pirate!"
