The Ascension Parish School Board today recognized Jodi Sheets for earning the 2017 School Nurse of the Year award by the Louisiana School Nurse Organization.

Currently assigned to St. Amant High School, Sheets has served as a school nurse in Ascension Public Schools for 16 years at various primary, middle and high schools. She serves on the district's Health Services CPR Committee and the Diabetic, Field Trip and Medication Policy Committee.

"Jodi is an outstanding school nurse and a team player. She exhibits independence, leadership, empathy and so much more as a school nurse for APSB," said Ascension's School Nurse Coordinator Jill Gautreau. "When St. Amant High was impacted by the Flood of 2016, her school location and schedule changed in an instant and this impacted the time all students received medication administration. She never batted an eye and all students were embraced in a fashion that showed the deepest empathy."

Sheets is a long-time member of the Louisiana School Nurse Organization and currently serves as its vice president. She is also a member of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and previously served as the NASN Director for the state association. While serving as NASN Director, she participated on the Investment Advisory Committee, Advocacy and Public Relations Committee, Strategic Planning Steering Committee and represented NASN at the Nurses in Washington Internship.

"Jodi is the absolute example of what teamwork is all about. There is no doubt that those around her are better because of her commitment to service, teamwork, and leadership in her profession," said Superintendent David Alexander.

Sheets earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Southeastern Louisiana University and is a dedicated mother of three girls.
