Items of Note for the 2017-18 School Year
Aug. 31, 2017
Dear Ascension Public Schools Family,
I hope this message finds you doing well and into the rhythm of a new school year. As we come near to the half-way point of the first quarter of the 2017-18 school year, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of you that made this year’s opening an excellent one, even though it wasn’t perfect. The collective work of all APSB staff, volunteers, parents, and our students made it such that we are off to what will be another year of high quality educational opportunities for our community’s youth.
Here are a few things that are significant to the 2017-18 school year:
St. Amant Primary and St. Amant Middle restoration projects completed this month. The Ascension Parish School Board will have the opportunity to approve construction bids for Lake Elementary, Galvez Middle, Galvez Primary and St. Amant High in the next few months. Our goal is to move back into Lake, Galvez Middle and Galvez Primary for the start of the 2018-19 school year and St. Amant High by December 2018. Visit www.apsb.org/FloodRecovery for the latest progress on these projects.
We continue to press forward with projects funded by the 2016 bond election including the construction of four new schools. Please visit our Planning and Construction website, www.apsb.org/construction, for the latest updates on those 15 projects. We look forward to announcing dates soon about groundbreakings for new schools in 2018.
Also new this year, high school seniors will be earning one of two different diplomas: Jump Start TOPS Tech Career Diploma and TOPS University Diploma. Although students began work on these two pathways as freshmen, this will be the first group to graduate under the state’s new diploma program. For more information, visit www.louisianabelieves.com/courses. It is important to note, students wanting to attend college can do so through both diploma pathways.
Finally, we will be providing information this fall around the new accountability system, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Components of this federal legislation will begin to be implemented in Louisiana public schools this year, and the results will be seen on next year’s state report cards. The state release of 2016-17 accountability results later this fall will show both the old accountability rules still in effect and a preview of how the new rules will look next year. For more information about ESSA, visit www.louisianabelieves.com/resources/about-us/every-student-succeeds-act-(essa).
Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. We are #AscensionStrong: A Great Place to Go to School, and a Great Place to Work!
